Goldilocks and Client Load: What’s “just right” for your practice?

Lately, it struck me that a good number of coaching clients for me is soooooooo much less than it ever used to be. Early in my practice, I had nearly 22 individual clients at one time. Back then, I defined this as a great success; now I know differently. Too many clients and I get burned out; too few and I get anxious. Too many clients and I can’t keep it all straight. Too few and I begin to care more about their lives than they do. Too many clients and my coaching skills suffer; too few clients and my coaching skills suffer (yes, you read that right). The list goes on.

I think it is so important for each of us to define what feels good for our businesses in terms of number of clients we work with. Everyone will have a different number. You have to find the one that’s best for you. For me, a good number of clients is this:

Eight.

As Goldilocks might say, eight is just right.

And, as my husband reminds me, 8 is the number within Jewish mysticism that signifies “that which is beyond nature and it’s perfection.” In other words, it is beyond perfection for me!

Have you REALLY defined and stated your own client-load-ideal? There’s power in that. You are signaling to yourself and to the Universe that you are open and ready. Feel free to post your just right number in the comments below! That counts as defining and stating. And remember–don’t let anyone tell you what you should have in terms of client load; you get to decide what’s just right for you.
