How to Get Started with a Vision Board: 6 statements to prime your mind for creating your own

Vision Boarding Collage Dec 2013

As many of us know, Vision Boards are powerful tools for visually stating what we want to bring “more of” into our lives. They are tools for inspiring, motivating, and driving us. I’ve been doing Vision Boards for YEARS. One thing I’ve learned is that it can be tough to get started. It’s challenging to figure out what we really want, what’s really going to make our heart sing, what we really and truly want MORE of in our lives. But, never fear, I’ve got six great ways to get you started.

If you are interested in creating a Vision Board for yourself this year (and I highly encourage you to do so), you’ll want to begin by completing these following 6 statements (and using your answers to them) as a launch point for “what to put on your board.” As you read each statement, have a piece of paper next to you and write down the FIRST thing that comes to mind as your answer–don’t over think it and don’t worry if it doesn’t make complete sense. Whatever your knee-jerk response is, it’s perfect.

  1. I yearn for…
  2. If I could learn one thing in life, really master it, it would be…
  3. I want to say YES to…
  4. I want to let go of…
  5. I am delighted by…
  6. My heart longs for…

Once you’ve completed these statements, troll through magazines, websites, old photos, etc. looking for pictures or combinations of words that represent your ideas. You can have one representation for each statement or you can have many. It doesn’t matter–this is your board and, so long as it speaks to you and is meaningful, you’re all good. Find the pictures or words that turn you on and then cut them out. (TIP: try to stay away from filling your board with only THINGS. Challenge yourself to fill your board with feelings, ideas, and WAYS OF BEING that you’d like to experience, too).

Paste your cut-out items on a piece of paper of poster board in any arrangement you like. (TIP: get a cheap elementary school glue stick–they work great for affixing magazine pics to poster board). Jazz up your Board with glitter, stickers, drawings, hand-written words, etc., if you so choose. It’s your inspirational board so make it YOU.

Laminate your board once it’s complete. Any office supply big box store can do this for you for a very minimal fee.

Hang your board up in a place where you will see it EVERY DAY. Then let the magic begin to happen…!

Happy Visioneering!
