Sex does not equal intimacy (and other thoughts on love + relationships)

Couple Together with Sunlight 600x400

Last week, I interviewed Huffington Post columnist Kira Sabin for my monthly Good Vibe Tribe FREE call. Kira is the Huff Post’s “relationships + love expert.” During the course of that call, we discussed everything from how to improve your experience of love + relationships to trends in modern dating…there was a little something for everyone. SO, given that Valentine’s Day is just 2 days away, I wanted to share with you my 3 favorite take-always from my LOVE DISCUSSION with Kira.

#3. We need intimacy + that does NOT equal sex.

All too often, we gauge our relationship health by the amount of sex we’re having. Kira reminds us all that INTIMACY is NOT sex . I think we forget that a soulful conversation over a glass of wine, a long afternoon walk-n-talk, or a few extra minutes each day just to check in and say “how ARE you?” is a critically important part of having and keeping a healthy relationship…and is really what we want + need if we’re talking true intimacy. Intimate relations are relations of the heart, not the genitalia.

#2. Communicate, communicate, communicate your needs.

The most important thing you can do insure a successful relationship is to get CRYSTAL clear about what you NEED in order to love + be loved. Consider learning about the 5 love languages, write down what’s elemental for you in how you spend your time, and/or take time to identify what you look for and need IN A FRIEND (not a girlfriend or boyfriend). Overlay that info on your romantic relationships and see what you notice. Then COMMUNICATE that. In fact, go one better and OVERCOMMUNICATE that.

#1. Choosing to wake up next to you each + every day is the greatest gift another person can give you.

WOW. Talk about breaking it down to brass tacks. When you look at your relationship from this angle, things can take on a radically different appearance. What a gift. SO, stop whining about the socks on the floor or the whiskers in the sink. You’ve got a partner, a person who’s CHOSEN you to be their “one” for today, for now, and maybe even forever. Savor that, and relish in the fact that YOU ARE SPECIAL…and loved!

Happy V-Day!
