(Video) Soapbox Moment

Hey, Coachy Coachy Loves.

I’m heading out to San Antonio later today for a DiSC Conference for the week. But first, I wanted to give you my Soapbox Moment.

Okay people, here’s what it is.

Do Not, DO NOT ask for business from people without giving them something first.

You cannot ask people for any kind of business whatsoever unless you have first given them something valuable. I’m not talking some dumbass trinket, either. I’m talking something they can really use, that’s really helpful, be it advice, maybe support in their business, maybe a Facebook Like, or an Instagram Heart, or maybe you start watching their Periscopes. Maybe it’s even just a card you pop in the mail to them and say, “Thinking of you. Just wanted to let you know I’m thinking of you.” Yeah.

I’ve noticed it’s been irritating me the last week or two. I’ve gotten several solicitations from people, who shall remain unnamed, of course. Solicitations for business that I’m just sitting here thinking, “Why would I do business with you? I am not in any way, shape, or form in relationship with you.”

So, get into relationship with people. Give to get. And you will have an endless stream of business.

Now I will get off my Soapbox Moment. Talk to you later! Bye!

I train, coach, and consult with individuals, teams, and organizations on how to be more effective communicators, build stronger workplace relationships, and create greater trust between leadership and "the rest of the team." The outcome: safe and innovative environments that encourage productive conflict, see high levels of engagement and committment, and create unparalleled results.
